Our Story:
Crystal Mullen-Johnson is the CEO and Founder of Strive Counseling Services located in Birmingham, AL. She is an award-winning therapist, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Private Independent Practitioner, and a Registered Play Therapist. She has more than 16 years of experience providing mental health counseling to individuals and families. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master’s Degree in Social Work at Alabama A&M University. She has also been featured as a mental health expert contributor in The Birmingham Times and AL.com publication. She was recognized by Birmingham Times as 1 of 200 Front Line Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
She also was recognized by the Mayor’s Office during the #StrongHer Campaign as a game changer for the City of Birmingham in promoting Mental Health. She facilitates mental health support groups and trainings. She is the author of the”21 Day Journey to Strive for a Healthier You.
In 2018, Crystal Mullen-Johnson, CEO of Strive Counseling and Founder of Nurture of Alabama, Inc, began an outreach initiative, which provides mental health education to historically marginalized communities throughout Birmingham, Alabama.
Ms. Mullen-Johnson hosted over 35 Mental Health Awareness Events, partnered with over 80 mental health and healthcare professionals, and community leaders, and served over 1,000 individuals. Because of the success of these initiatives and the tremendous amount of work yet to be, Nurture of Alabama, Inc. was launched in 2021 as a sister organization of Strive Counseling Services, LLC. Through strategic partnerships, Nurture envisions an Alabama that nurtures the mental health of all, especially historically marginalized communities, to improve their quality of life. We are working to expand access and shift the conversation about mental health.
Key community partners include the Birmingham Housing Authority, W.J. Christian School, Jefferson County Family Court, District 1, and Dream Girls Academy. For the past six years, Nurture of Alabama has proudly partnered with the City of Birmingham Mayor’s Office to host the annual Citywide Mental Health Day. Our major fundraising event is the annual Golf Tournament, and we are excited to celebrate its 4th year in 2026.
We are community-driven, resilient, collaborative, culturally-affirming, trauma-informed and compassionate. Our strategic pillars are community education, sustainable growth and mental health services.
